Product Description

Accurate pH measurement depends on reliable calibration, and calibration is only as accurate as the buffer solutions used. Skill Scientific pH buffer solutions and sachets are formulated to traceable standards and are compatible with all Skill Scientific pH meters — as well as most other laboratory pH instruments — providing a convenient, trusted calibration consumable for routine laboratory and field use.

Three pH values are available — pH 4.00, 6.86 and 9.18 — covering the standard calibration points for 1, 2 and 3 point calibration across the full working range of most laboratory pH electrodes. All three values correspond to the JJG119 Chinese national standard and are automatically recognised by the buffer Auto-ID function on all Skill Scientific touchscreen and LCD pH meters.

Buffer solutions are available in two formats to suit different working environments. Powder sachets offer extended shelf life and are easy to transport and store — each sachet is dissolved in purified water to prepare a fresh 250mL buffer solution as needed, minimising waste and ensuring a fresh, uncontaminated calibration standard every time. Ready-to-use liquid solutions in 250mL and 500mL bottles are available for laboratories that calibrate frequently and prefer the convenience of a pre-made solution.

Available Formats:

  • pH Buffer Sachets — Set of 3: One sachet each of pH 4.00, 6.86 and 9.18. Each sachet prepares 250mL when dissolved in purified water. Powder format for extended shelf life and easy transport.
  • pH Buffer Sachet — Single: Individual sachets of pH 4.00, 6.86 or 9.18. Same powder format as the set — specify required pH value when ordering.
  • pH Buffer Solution 250mL: Ready-to-use liquid, available in pH 4.00, 6.86 or 9.18. Single bottle, 250mL.
  • pH Buffer Solution 500mL: Ready-to-use liquid, available in pH 4.00, 6.86 or 9.18. Single bottle, 500mL.

FAQ

Which pH buffer values should I use for calibration?

For 2-point calibration, use pH 4.00 and 6.86 for acidic sample ranges, or pH 6.86 and 9.18 for alkaline sample ranges. For 3-point calibration covering the full pH range, use all three values (pH 4.00, 6.86 and 9.18). For single-point calibration on samples close to neutral, pH 6.86 is the most common choice. Use the buffer value closest to your expected sample pH as the primary calibration point.

What is the difference between powder sachets and liquid buffer solutions?

Powder sachets have a longer shelf life than pre-made liquid solutions and are more convenient for transport and field use — each sachet is dissolved in 250mL of purified water immediately before calibration, ensuring a fresh standard every time. Liquid solutions in 250mL and 500mL bottles are ready to use immediately and are more practical for laboratories that calibrate frequently throughout the day. Once opened, liquid solutions should be used within the recommended period stated on the label.

Are these buffers compatible with non-Skill Scientific pH meters?

Yes. The pH 4.00, 6.86 and 9.18 values are standard international calibration points used by all major pH meter manufacturers. These buffer solutions are compatible with pH meters from all brands that support calibration at these values. They are automatically recognised by the buffer Auto-ID function on Skill Scientific pH meters using JJG119, DIN or USA buffer standard recognition.

How should pH buffer solutions be stored?

Powder sachets should be stored in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Dissolved buffer solutions and liquid bottles should be stored at room temperature, kept tightly sealed when not in use and protected from contamination. Discard any buffer solution that appears discoloured, turbid or has been in contact with a pH electrode without being discarded after calibration. Do not return used buffer to the original bottle.

How much buffer solution do I need for calibration?

A typical single calibration requires 20–50mL of each buffer value used. For a 3-point calibration, this means 60–150mL total. A 250mL bottle or sachet preparation provides enough solution for multiple calibration sessions. Discard buffer solutions after each calibration session to avoid contamination from the electrode affecting future calibrations.
